Two Rivers Reading Series at Anoka-Ramsey Community College presents Mona Susan Power
Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024
2 to 2:50 pm
Legacy Room
Anoka-Ramsey Coon Rapids Campus
The event is free and open to the public.
A modern masterpiece, Powers’ "A Council of Dolls" is gorgeous, quietly devastating and ultimately hopeful, shining a light on the echoing damage wrought by Indian boarding schools and the historical massacres of Indigenous people. With stunning prose, Mona Susan Power weaves a spell of love and healing that comes alive on the page. “Power’s deep knowledge of Indigenous history comes through in keen depictions of the Indian schools,” writes "Publishers Weekly" in a starred review, “and she illuminates the characters’ struggles with generation trauma, which arise as they try to sustain their connections to the past.”
"A Council of Dolls" was named a Minnesota Book Award Finalist, nominated for the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction, and the National Book Award Longlist. Power has also authored three other books of fiction: "The Grass Dancer" (awarded the PEN/Hemingway prize), "Roofwalker," and "Sacred Wilderness." Her short stories and essays have been widely published in journals and anthologies, including "The Best American Short Stories" series, The "Paris Review," "The Atlantic Monthly," and "Granta." Power is an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe (Yanktonai Dakota), and was born and raised in Chicago. She currently lives in Minnesota.
We are excited to feature Mona Susan Power and "A Council of Dolls" for our Fall 2024 event. Anoka-Ramsey students will have the unique opportunity to read this powerful and important novel, attend the reading, meet the author and have their book signed.
