Mississippi River Shoreline Restoration Underway on Coon Rapids Campus of Anoka-Ramsey Community College

The Mississippi River shoreline located on the Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s Coon Rapids Campus is eroding and is in need of repair. The college is undertaking shoreline restoration that includes stabilizing the riverbank soils to reduce the sediment load to the river, repairing aging and broken storm water drains, and developing an outdoor classroom with safe access to the river for environmental science teaching and learning activities. The project began April 12 and will be completed May 31, 2017.     

“Our stewardship of and access to the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area is taken seriously by the college community,” says Kenneth Karr, Director of Facilities for Anoka-Ramsey. “We are extremely proud of and have great respect for this natural treasure on our campus. Anoka-Ramsey is dedicated to maintaining the river’s integrity.”

Anoka-Ramsey staff engaged experts in river bank restoration and worked closely with government stakeholders including City of Coon Rapids, the Coon Creek Watershed District, Department of Natural Resources and the Army Corps of Engineers throughout project design. A rigorous state and local permitting process ensures projects like this are designed to positively impact the river and surrounding environment.
